Mohena Belle Harris Butler's 1941 high school graduation photo and the quilt made from her clothing.

PREPARE

1. Collect available clothing. Natural fibers, especially cottons or woven fabrics with a high cotton content, are easiest to work with, but other fabrics can be stabilized so they are easier to use.

2. Sort fabric collection by weight: lightweight (batiste, lightweight cotton, silk or rayon, scarves); medium-weight (heavier cottons, lightweight denim or chambray, medium-weight T-shirt fabrics, lightweight bathrobes or slacks); and heavyweight (denim, suitings, corduroy, sweatshirt fabrics, heavyweight slacks).

3. Select items from either the lightweight and medium-weight piles or from the medium-weight and heavyweight piles to combine in one quilt. Reserve other clothing items for another project.

4. Wash and dry selected clothing. Fragile items may be laundered in lingerie bags.
